Movement B Celebrates 20 Years of Transforming the Business World

The B Movement celebrates 20 years with over 10,800 B Corps in 104 countries driving sustainability, social impact, and a new global business model.

The B Movement celebrates two decades of promoting a new way of understanding business success. What began in 2006 with just 81 pioneering companies has grown into a global network comprising over 10,800 certified B Corps in 104 countries and 162 economic sectors, generating employment for over one million people worldwide.

Over these 20 years, the movement has established itself as one of the leading international references in corporate sustainability, regenerative economy, and corporate responsibility. Its main objective is to demonstrate that companies can generate economic profits while creating a positive impact on people, communities, and the planet.

What is Movement B and why is it revolutionizing businesses

The B Movement —also known globally as B Corp— promotes a business model that goes beyond traditional profitability. Certified B Corporations commit to integrating social, environmental, and governance criteria at the core of their business decisions.

Unlike traditional companies, these organizations seek to balance economic benefits with positive impact. This involves continuously measuring and improving aspects such as:

  • Climate action
  • Human rights
  • Working conditions
  • Circular economy
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • corporate transparency
  • Community impact

The certification is awarded by B Lab, an international nonprofit organization that evaluates the social and environmental performance of companies using global sustainability standards.

From 81 companies to a global network present in over 100 countries

The growth of Movement B has been exponential. In just two decades, it has gone from being a minority initiative in the United States to consolidating itself as a global community with a presence in more than 100 countries.

Currently, over 400,000 companies use impact assessment tools developed by B Lab to measure and improve their sustainable practices.

International companies such as Natura, Danone, and Nespresso are part of the movement, demonstrating that the B Corp model can be applied to both small businesses and large multinational corporations.

B Corporations better withstand crises and bet on the long term

One of the aspects most frequently highlighted in studies on B Corporations is their resilience. According to data from B Lab, 95% of B Corporations managed to weather the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to 88% of traditional companies.

Experts explain that this is due to more sustainable business models, stronger relationships with employees and communities, and strategies focused on the long term rather than immediate profits.

Furthermore, recent research indicates that if all companies managed their environmental impact as B Corps currently do, the global temperature increase could be reduced by up to 0.5ºC by 2100.

Spain and Latin America accelerate the growth of the B Corp model

Movement B has experienced particularly strong growth in Spain and Latin America. Spain already exceeds 340 certified B Corps and has established itself as one of the European countries with the greatest growth in corporate sustainability.

In Latin America, countries like Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and Peru are leading the adoption of the model. Argentina, for example, has 294 B Corps distributed across 30 economic sectors and generates over 45,800 formal jobs linked to certified companies.

The region has also driven significant legislative changes through the BIC laws (Benefit and Collective Interest Corporations), which legally recognize companies committed to social and environmental impact.

New, more demanding standards for sustainable companies

Coinciding with its 20th anniversary, B Corp is driving a profound overhaul of its international standards. The new standards will be stricter and will require mandatory requirements in seven key areas of business impact.

Among the new criteria are:

  • Emission Reduction and Climate Action
  • Labor and human rights
  • Environmental management and circularity
  • Corporate transparency
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Ethical Governance
  • Positive social impact

Furthermore, the audits will be verified by independent external bodies to ensure a higher level of transparency and credibility.

The business future will be increasingly linked to sustainability.

Movement B believes that the great challenge of the next decade will be to scale this model to structurally influence the global economy. The goal is no longer solely to demonstrate that another way of doing business is possible, but to make it the norm.

Growing social pressure, new environmental regulations, and demands from consumers and investors are forcing companies to rethink their role in society.

More and more experts agree that sustainability is no longer just an ethical or reputational issue, but a strategic factor for ensuring competitiveness, innovation, and business survival in the future.

After 20 years of continuous growth, the B Movement has established itself as one of the most influential global initiatives in transforming the business world towards more sustainable, inclusive, and regenerative models.
