Galicia is not immune to this trend: different projects linked to these infrastructures are requesting access and capacity to the electrical network, in a context in which the availability of power has become one of the main factors in deciding where they can be installed.<\/p><p>The situation highlights an increasingly relevant issue: the capacity of electrical grids to absorb substantial new demand without compromising system stability or displacing other industrial projects.<\/p><h2>Data centers already concentrate an important part of the new demand<\/h2><p>The latest data published by Red El\u00e9ctrica illustrate the scale this phenomenon is reaching in Spain. As of October 1, 2026, data centers accounted for 34.2% of the total access capacity granted on the transmission network for new demand, with 6,328 MW allocated.<\/p><p>According to Red El\u00e9ctrica, none of those 6,328 MW corresponding to data centers had yet come into service. In total, the access capacity granted for demand in the transmission network reached 18.52 GW, of which 11.05 GW corresponded to facilities not yet operational.<\/p><p>The data reflects the extent to which data centers have become a major new potential consumer of electricity and explains part of the pressure being experienced by certain points on the grid.<\/p><h2>Galicia seeks to harness its energy potential.<\/h2><p>The Galician case also presents a distinctive feature: the region possesses a high capacity for renewable energy generation.<\/p><p>According to Red El\u00e9ctrica data corresponding to 2025, Galicia closed the year with 9,892 MW of installed power, of which approximately 82% corresponded to renewable technologies. Wind energy represented 40.7% of the installed power and hydraulic energy 37.7%.<\/p><p>This availability of renewable generation can become an attractive factor for projects requiring large amounts of electricity, especially in a context where companies and public authorities are seeking to reduce the environmental impact associated with the growth of artificial intelligence and digital services.<\/p><p>However, having renewable generation does not necessarily mean that there is sufficient capacity to connect new large consumers. Generation, transportation network, distribution and access capacity must be coordinated.<\/p><h2>The new bottleneck: securing power<\/h2><p>The availability of electricity is thus becoming one of the factors that determine the location of new data centers.<\/p><p>At certain nodes of the Spanish grid, requests for new capacity exceed available capacity. This situation has already prompted the Ministry for the Ecological Transition to organize auctions to allocate capacity at specific grid points\u2014including the Nuevo Vigo node in Galicia, which had 182 MW of available capacity in one of these processes.<\/p><p>The problem does not only affect data centers. Industries, electrification projects, railway infrastructure and other facilities also need new network access.<\/p><p>Consequently, the growth of data centers is sparking a debate on how to allocate electrical capacity that is limited in certain areas.<\/p><h2>Artificial intelligence increases energy demands.<\/h2><p>The growth in demand is closely linked to the expansion of artificial intelligence.<\/p><p>Data centers need electricity not only to power the servers that process information, but also to maintain cooling, storage, security, and backup power systems.<\/p><p>At the international level, the International Energy Agency projects strong growth in electricity consumption by these facilities over the coming years. In Spain, the government itself estimates that the computing requirements associated with artificial intelligence by 2030 would entail an electricity demand of between 3.5 and 4 GW, although existing applications and permits far exceed that figure.<\/p><p>This has led the Executive to propose new conditions for the development of data centers.<\/p><h2>The government is preparing new sustainability requirements.<\/h2><p>In August 2026, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition proposed a draft royal decree aimed at establishing energy, environmental and resilience sustainability requirements for data centers.<\/p><p>Among the proposed measures is a requirement for these facilities to back their consumption with new renewable energy generation. The proposal stipulates that data centers must cover 80% of their energy consumption with new renewable generation for every hour of operation, in addition to meeting specific energy and water efficiency criteria.<\/p><p>The proposal responds to a growing concern: that the expansion of artificial intelligence and digital services will cause an increase in electricity demand that forces the use of more emissions-intensive technologies or generates additional tensions on the networks.<\/p><h2>Galicia faces an energy opportunity and challenge.<\/h2><p>The arrival of new data centers can represent an opportunity for Galicia due to its availability of renewable generation, its geographical position and the development of digital infrastructures.<\/p><p>However, the sector's growth also necessitates strengthening energy planning. The issue is no longer solely about having available land or attracting investment, but rather ensuring sufficient electric power, connection capacity, and a grid capable of meeting high demand without compromising other uses.<\/p><p>The challenge will be to ensure that the growth of data centers advances accompanied by new electrical infrastructure, renewable generation and demand management mechanisms.<\/p><p>In this regard, Galicia\u2019s evolution will serve as an example of one of the major challenges of the energy transition: how to supply sufficient, clean electricity to an increasingly digital economy without overloading existing grids.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph
