The price of the Dutch TTF—the primary benchmark for the European gas market—has recently surpassed 75 euros per megawatt-hour (€/MWh), reaching levels not seen since early 2023. This surge comes at a particularly critical time: Europe is heading into winter with lower-than-usual gas reserves, while the international liquefied natural gas (LNG) market is being shaped by the situation in the Middle East and restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation does not imply, for now, an immediate lack of gas in Europe. The European Commission and Member States consider that supply is guaranteed for the coming months. However, the scenario reveals a new structural vulnerability: Europe has reduced its dependence on Russian gas, but has become much more integrated into the global LNG market and is therefore more exposed to its geopolitical and price tensions.

European gas prices are soaring again.

The TTF, the reference for a large part of natural gas operations in Europe, has experienced a sharp rise in recent weeks. The market surpassed €75/MWh, while during the day on September 8 it was still at levels close to €74/MWh.

The increase is driven by several factors acting simultaneously. On one hand, uncertainty regarding international LNG flows persists. On the other, Europe needs to continue building up its gas reserves ahead of the months of peak demand—precisely when prices are high.

Added to this is the geopolitical tension in the Middle East. The conflict has affected LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's main routes for transporting liquefied natural gas.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) notes that, prior to the disruption associated with the conflict, nearly 20% of the global LNG supply passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Although flows have increased since the interim agreement reached between the United States and Iran in June, they remain well below pre-conflict levels.

Hormuz once again places European energy security at the center of the debate

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important strategic points in the global energy system. Large volumes of oil and liquefied natural gas from major Gulf producers pass through it.

For Europe, the importance of this route has increased since 2022. The progressive loss of Russian gas via pipeline forced European countries to look for alternative suppliers, and LNG became one of the main routes to guarantee supply.

According to ACER, LNG currently accounts for nearly half of the European Union's gas supply. In 2025, the EU imported a record 146 billion cubic meters of LNG, becoming the world's largest importer. The United States supplied 58% of those European LNG imports.

This transformation has made it possible to diversify supply sources, but it has also changed the nature of European vulnerability.

Europe no longer relies as heavily on a single pipeline gas supplier. It now depends to a greater extent on a global LNG market where it competes for the same cargoes with Asia and other major consumers.

Europe and Asia compete for LNG.

This international competition is one of the keys to understanding the rise in natural gas prices in Europe.

When available supply dwindles, LNG cargoes tend to head toward markets that offer the most attractive prices. During much of the second quarter of 2026, Asian prices surpassed European prices, encouraging the diversion of flexible cargoes to Asia.

The IEA estimates that between March and June, Asian spot LNG prices commanded an average premium of around $2.10 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) over the TTF. In January and February, by contrast, Europe had maintained a premium over Asia.

The result is a market much more sensitive to any supply disruption.

If LNG supplies from the Middle East decrease while Asian demand rises, Europe must compete for available cargoes. And that competition translates into higher gas prices.

European storage: the other major concern

Added to the pressure on international supply is a second issue: the level of European reserves.

EU gas storage is currently at around 66% of its capacity, a figure considerably lower than usual for these dates. Some large markets present an even tighter situation. Germany is around 53-54%, while the Netherlands is below 50%.

The problem is not necessarily that Europe is going to run out of gas.

The problem is that there is less margin of safety before the period of greatest consumption begins.

During the winter, stored reserves play a crucial role in meeting peak demand. The less gas is in storage at the start of the cold season, the greater the need to resort to new purchases during the winter.

And doing so with a TTF close to €75/MWh can be especially expensive.

Are we facing a new energy crisis in Europe?

The answer, for now, is no.

On September 3, the European Commission convened the Gas Coordination Group and concluded that there is no immediate risk to the security of European supply. Brussels highlights that the EU currently benefits from greater supplier diversification, substantial LNG import capacity, and gas demand that is structurally lower than in previous years.

The situation is, therefore, very different from that of 2022.

Europe has learned from that crisis and has developed new LNG infrastructure, increased interconnections, and diversified its suppliers.

Furthermore, European gas consumption continues to decline. The IEA expects gas demand in Europe to decline by more than 2% during 2026, driven mainly by the growth of renewable energy and high gas prices.

However, the absence of an immediate supply risk does not mean the market is out of danger.

The main concern now is the price and the possibility that a prolonged period of tension will keep European gas at high levels for the coming months.

More LNG outside the Gulf, but not enough to eliminate the risk.

There is also an element that is helping to cushion the impact of the crisis.

LNG production outside the Middle East rose sharply during 2026. Between March and June, supply from non-Gulf countries grew by approximately 18%—about 27 billion cubic meters—offsetting around three-quarters of the drop in shipments from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The United States, Canada, Africa and other producers are helping to increase global supply.

The IEA also projects that new LNG projects in North America, Africa, and Australia will contribute nearly 50 billion additional cubic meters during 2026.

This increase in production is one of the reasons why the European market can face the current situation with greater margin than during the energy crisis of 2022.

However, there is a caveat: if the recovery of Gulf exports is delayed, the global market could face a much tighter period.

The real impact: the competitiveness of the European economy

Beyond the possibility of a physical gas shortage, the main risk for Europe is economic.

More expensive natural gas directly affects industries that use large amounts of energy, from chemicals and fertilizers to steel, ceramics, glass and certain industrial processes.

It also affects the price of electricity, as gas-fired power plants continue to play a significant role in European electricity generation and price formation.

The IEA has already warned that rising gas prices are affecting fertilizer production and other energy-intensive industries.

Therefore, the European debate should not be limited to whether there will be enough gas during the winter.

The fundamental question is how much Europe will have to pay for it and what impact that cost will have on the competitiveness of its companies.

Europe facing a new phase of its energy security

The current situation leaves a clear conclusion: the European energy transition is not only about replacing one supplier with another.

Since 2022, Europe has drastically reduced its reliance on Russian gas and succeeded in diversifying its supply sources. However, this transformation has increased the role of LNG and, consequently, exposure to the global market.

ACER considers that the response to this vulnerability goes through three main routes: reducing demand through energy efficiency and savings, continuing to diversify supply sources and accelerating the deployment of European renewable energies.

The Hormuz incident demonstrates the extent to which geopolitics can rapidly spill over into the European energy market.

Europe today has more suppliers, more infrastructure and greater response capacity than four years ago. But as long as gas continues to play an important role in its energy system, any significant disruption to the global LNG market may again translate into higher prices, pressure on the industry and greater economic uncertainty.

The coming winter will therefore be a test for the new European energy model: not so much to see whether Europe has enough gas, but to determine the cost of securing it in an international market increasingly shaped by geopolitics.

The European natural gas market is once again under pressure.
