New scenarios have emerged alongside traditional risks, such as the proliferation of electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and devices equipped with lithium-ion batteries. These fires can exhibit high thermal intensity, toxic emissions, and a risk of reignition, necessitating the search for solutions that complement conventional extinguishing agents.

In this context, ECOFIRE was developed in Spain as a water-based fire extinguishing agent designed to enhance the wetting, cooling, insulating, and protective capabilities of water. Its purpose is not only to extinguish visible flames but also to reduce the spread of fire, protect exposed materials, and decrease the risk of reignition.

The following section analyzes its origin, its business evolution, the types of fires in which it can be used, the reasons why it can be useful for fire departments, and its current international presence.

How ECOFIRE was born

The origin of ECOFIRE is linked to one of the most serious forest fires to have occurred in Spain in recent decades: the Guadalajara fire of 2005. This event caused the death of eleven members of a forest fire crew and devastated thousands of hectares, leaving a deep social mark and highlighting the enormous difficulty of controlling a high-intensity fire.

Following that event, César Sallén, a businessman and inventor from Aragon, began to consider whether it was possible to develop a product that would help fight fires more effectively. His aim was to find a solution that would not only temporarily cool the fuel but would also adhere to the materials, hinder the spread of flames, and reduce the possibility of reignition.

The project's main motivation was therefore to improve the operational capacity of water. Although water remains the most widely used extinguishing agent due to its availability and high heat absorption capacity, it has some limitations. It can run off quickly on certain surfaces, evaporate before reaching the deeper layers of the fuel, or not remain long enough to prevent a material from reigniting.

Mr. César Sallén initiated a lengthy process of research and experimentation. For years, different formulations were tested, many of which did not yield the expected results. The development also benefited from the collaboration and expertise of professionals involved in firefighting services, especially firefighters from the province of Huesca.

After numerous tests, a stable formulation based on water and organic components was achieved. This solution was designed to improve the liquid's wetting and adhesion, create a protective coating over the fuel, and help reduce heat transfer and contact with oxygen.

Thus, ECOFIRE was born as a result of a combination of technical research, practical experience and a motivation clearly linked to the protection of people, property and the environment.

The founder and main drivers of the project

César Sallén should be considered the inventor and main driving force behind the original ECOFIRE concept. He initiated the research process, developed the initial formulations, and promoted the necessary testing to transform an idea into a potentially marketable solution.

However, the project's growth cannot be explained solely by its inventor. The Aragonese company Simonrack subsequently played a fundamental role in the product's manufacturing, distribution, and internationalization.

Simonrack is a company specializing in storage systems, metal shelving, and industrial equipment. Its production capacity, commercial experience, and presence in international markets enabled it to develop ECOFIRE into a structured business line.

In 2022, it was announced that Simonrack would assume exclusive distribution rights for ECOFIRE. From that moment on, a period of increased public visibility, development of application equipment, commercial demonstrations, and international expansion began.

Later, ECOFIRE Global Distributor SL was established, a company specifically focused on the international marketing and distribution of products and systems related to ECOFIRE.

Therefore, it is necessary to differentiate three functions:

César Sallén is the inventor and original creator of the solution.

Simonrack has acted as an industrial partner, manufacturer, and commercial driver.

ECOFIRE Global Distributor SL is the company specializing in the global distribution of the product.

When did ECOFIRE's business journey begin?

The evolution of ECOFIRE can be divided into several clearly differentiated stages.

The first stage began after the Guadalajara fire of 2005. At that time, the idea was born and the research process began. However, it was not yet possible to speak of a consolidated business activity, since the product was still in the development phase.

During the following years, tests, formulation modifications, and preliminary demonstrations were carried out. The goal was to obtain an agent that was sufficiently stable, effective, and adaptable to different firefighting equipment.

The second stage takes place approximately between 2021 and 2022, when the formulation is finalized and preparations for its industrial production begin. During this period, the project gradually transitions from research to commercialization.

The year 2022 can be considered the clearest start of ECOFIRE's business. During that year, the product was publicly launched, the exclusive distribution agreement with Simonrack was announced, and the first international commercial operations began.

In 2023, demonstrations were intensified, the range of equipment was expanded, and specific solutions were presented for different scenarios, such as fires in batteries, homes, vehicles, parking lots, or storage facilities.

Finally, in May 2025, ECOFIRE Global Distributor SL formally began its activity as a specialized commercial company.

Therefore, it can be stated that ECOFIRE has its conceptual origin in 2005, begins its commercial and industrial development around 2022 and consolidates its international business structure from 2025 onwards.

What is ECOFIRE and how does it work?

ECOFIRE is a water-based fire extinguishing solution with organic components. Its formulation aims to complement the properties of water and improve its performance on certain fuels.

The product works through several simultaneous mechanisms.

Refrigeration

The water in the formulation absorbs some of the fire's heat energy. By lowering the fuel temperature, it hinders continued combustion and limits the generation of new flammable gases.

Cooling is especially important in solid materials, machinery, industrial facilities, and lithium-ion batteries.

Humidification

The formulation improves water's ability to spread and penetrate materials. This can be useful in porous fuels such as wood, cardboard, paper, textiles, vegetation, or compacted waste.

Increased wetting allows reaching internal areas of the fuel that may remain hot even after the external flames have disappeared.

Adherence

Unlike conventional water, which can run off quickly on vertical or low-absorbent surfaces, ECOFIRE is designed to stay attached for longer.

This property can improve the protection of walls, structures, vegetation, vehicles, or materials near a fire.

Suffocation and isolation

The layer formed by the product helps to isolate the fuel from oxygen and the heat source. This hinders the spread of flames and the continuation of combustion.

Reignition prevention

One of ECOFIRE's main objectives is to reduce the possibility of a seemingly extinguished material reigniting. The product's continued presence on the surface helps maintain cooling and insulation for a longer period.

However, the duration of this protection will depend on the type of fuel, the amount applied, the temperature, the environmental conditions, and the existence of internal heat sources.

What types of fire is ECOFIRE suitable for?

ECOFIRE is presented as a multipurpose solution, although its use must be analyzed according to the type of fuel and the specific conditions of the fire.

Class A fires

Class A fires affect solid materials such as wood, paper, cardboard, textiles, certain plastics, and vegetation.

ECOFIRE can be especially useful in these fires because it improves water penetration and stays on the fuel for longer.

The technical documentation published by the company includes tests in which a six-liter kit achieved an effectiveness equivalent to 21A. This result indicates a favorable capacity to combat solid fires under the specific conditions of the test.

Among its possible applications are:

Fires in warehouses.

Packaging material.

Wood and furniture.

Fabrics.

Waste.

Housing.

Agricultural facilities.

Vegetation and stubble.

Fires caused by cooking oils and fats

Class F fires mainly affect oils and fats used in cooking.

These fires should not be attacked with a direct jet of conventional water, as the contact of water with the high-temperature oil can cause a violent projection of the fuel and spread the flames.

ECOFIRE has been subjected to laboratory tests on cooking oil fires, achieving an effectiveness of 40F in the evaluated configuration. No reignition occurred during the subsequent observation period.

This type of result can make it suitable for professional kitchens, hospitality establishments, food industries and food preparation areas, provided that the equipment used has the required approval in each country.

Lithium-ion battery fires

The application of ECOFIRE to lithium-ion batteries is one of the aspects that has generated the most interest.

Batteries can undergo a process known as thermal runaway. When a cell reaches a critical temperature, it can release flammable gases, generate large amounts of heat, and transmit the reaction to nearby cells.

In these situations, simply eliminating visible flames is not enough. It is necessary to reduce the internal temperature of the battery and prevent the reaction from spreading.

ECOFIRE has been tested by laboratories such as APPLUS on NMC battery modules. The published tests evaluated six-liter and forty-liter systems under approximate loads of one and five kilowatt-hours.

The results indicated that the product was able to control the fire, reduce the temperature, limit the spread and prevent reignition during the established observation period.

These tests provide favorable evidence, but should be interpreted with caution. A five-kilowatt-hour battery is considerably smaller than the battery of an electric car, whose capacity can easily exceed fifty kilowatt-hours.

Therefore, the results do not allow us to conclude that a portable ECOFIRE unit can extinguish any electric vehicle or energy storage system. Its performance will depend on the battery's capacity, chemistry, design, cell accessibility, and the state of the fire.

Agricultural and forest fires

ECOFIRE is also being promoted for agricultural and forestry applications.

It can be used on agricultural machinery, harvesters, tractors, livestock farms, cultivated fields, stubble fields and forest areas.

One of its most interesting applications is the creation of preventative barriers. By applying the product to vegetation, structures, or materials near a risk zone, the aim is to hinder the spread of flames.

These barriers can be used around:

Isolated houses.

Farms.

Agricultural buildings.

Livestock facilities.

Machinery.

Deposits.

Roads and security perimeters.

ECOFIRE has retardant behavior tests carried out on vegetation, including pine needles treated with the product.

However, a laboratory test does not fully replicate the conditions of a large forest fire. Factors such as wind, slope, humidity, vegetation continuity, and the emergence of secondary fires can radically alter the fire's behavior.

Therefore, ECOFIRE should be considered a complementary tool for prevention, protection and initial attack, and not a solution capable of stopping any forest fire on its own.

Industrial and logistics fires

In industrial facilities, ECOFIRE can be used to protect machinery, electrical panels, warehouses, shelving, battery charging areas and parking lots.

The company has developed various automated solutions, including:

Systems for industrial shelving.

Parking protection.

Systems for charging stations.

Portable equipment.

Large capacity tanks.

Lances and sprayers.

Application systems using pumps.

These installations must be designed according to the fire load, the specific risk, the concentration of the product, the required flow rate, the location of the nozzles and the applicable fire protection regulations.

Electrical installations

ECOFIRE declares that it has certain dielectric properties, which could offer advantages in actions on electrical equipment.

However, no liquid agent should be applied indiscriminately to an energized installation. Safety will depend on the voltage, application distance, spray pattern, liquid contamination, equipment configuration, and environmental conditions.

Whenever possible, the first step should be to disconnect the power supply, isolate the installation, and verify the absence of voltage.

Why firefighters might use ECOFIRE instead of water alone

The use of ECOFIRE by fire services should not be considered as an absolute replacement for water, but as an improvement or tactical complement in certain scenarios.

Longer lasting on materials

Water can run off quickly, especially on vertical surfaces, metal structures, vehicles, or materials with low absorbency.

ECOFIRE can remain adhered for longer, allowing for prolonged protection and reducing heat transfer.

Better penetration

In fires involving wood, cardboard, waste, or vegetation, the flames may go out while hot spots remain inside the fuel.

A solution with greater wetting capacity can penetrate deeper and reduce the risk of these hot spots causing reignition.

Exposure protection

Firefighters must not only extinguish the main fire. They must also prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, vehicles, machinery, storage facilities, or vegetation.

The adhesion of ECOFIRE can help create a protective barrier over materials exposed to thermal radiation.

Reduction of reignition

In the tests carried out on oils and battery modules, no reignition was observed during the established monitoring period.

This feature can be especially useful during finishing and monitoring tasks, although it does not eliminate the need to monitor the temperature for an extended period.

Possible reduction in water consumption

In some scenarios, ECOFIRE could allow a fire to be extinguished or controlled using less liquid than with conventional water.

This feature would be especially valuable in rural areas, forest fires, facilities far from hydrants, or interventions where the water supply is limited.

However, a fixed equivalence between ECOFIRE and water should not be established for every type of fire. Commercial claims that one liter of product can be equivalent to several tens of liters of water will necessarily depend on the fuel, the application system, and the test conditions.

Less secondary damage

Powder fire extinguishers can quickly extinguish certain fires, but they cause significant contamination of machinery, electronic equipment, food, and indoor spaces.

A biodegradable liquid solution can reduce the damage caused by the extinguishing agent and facilitate subsequent cleaning tasks.

This does not mean that the liquid used can be poured freely. After coming into contact with fuels, electrolytes, metals, or fire residue, it must be managed as a potentially contaminated product.

Why water remains essential

Despite the potential advantages of ECOFIRE, water remains an essential element in firefighting.

Its main advantage is its high heat absorption capacity. Furthermore, it can be supplied continuously via hydrants, fire engines, tanks, pools, or natural sources.

In a large fire, the total amount of heat energy that needs to be removed can be enormous. Portable equipment, regardless of the quality of the agent, may prove insufficient.

In lithium-ion battery fires, the problem isn't always the effectiveness of water, but rather the difficulty of getting it inside the battery. The cells are usually protected by metal casings, trays, and structural systems that prevent direct access for the extinguishing agent.

ECOFIRE may also encounter this limitation. If the product does not reach the cells experiencing thermal runaway, it may extinguish the external flames without completely stopping the internal reaction.

For this reason, the actions of the firefighters must include:

Prolonged refrigeration.

Control using thermal cameras.

Gas measurement.

Use of respiratory protection equipment.

Electrical insulation.

Subsequent monitoring.

Prevention of spread.

Planning the transport and storage of the vehicle or battery.

Sufficient reserve of water or extinguishing agent.

ECOFIRE can improve certain operations, but it does not replace training, risk assessment, or safety procedures.

The most appropriate use for fire services

From a professional point of view, ECOFIRE could be incorporated into emergency services for the following functions:

Initial attack on small or medium-sized fires.

Protection of nearby vehicles, structures and materials.

Control of solid fires.

Intervention on small batteries and accessible modules.

Extinguishing fires in kitchens.

Protection of agricultural machinery.

Creation of preventive barriers.

Hot spot clearance.

Automatic industrial protection systems.

Interventions in areas with limited water supply.

Before implementation, it would be advisable for each service to conduct its own tests, operational practices, and specific protocols.

Firefighters should know:

The concentrations of use.

The actual capacity of each team.

The fuels for which it has been tested.

Product limitations.

Compatibility with pumps and hoses.

Cleaning procedures.

The management of the product used.

Minimum surveillance times.

Personal protective measures.

Countries where ECOFIRE is present

The company states that ECOFIRE has a commercial presence in thirty-seven countries through an international network of distributors.

International expansion began shortly after the product's launch. Simonrack already had export experience and business contacts in various markets, which facilitated the product's introduction outside of Spain.

According to published maps and corporate materials, ECOFIRE would have a presence in different regions of Europe, America, Asia and Oceania.

Among the countries that can be identified in the graphic documentation are:

Spain.

Portugal.

France.

Belgium.

Germany.

Italy.

Czech Republic.

USA.

Mexico.

Colombia.

Brazil.

Chile.

Argentina.

China.

Australia.

The company states that its network spans thirty-seven countries. However, the public website does not provide a complete list of the names, addresses, and contact information for all distributors.

For this reason, the figure should be interpreted as an official declaration of the company's international presence. For commercial transactions, tenders, or distribution agreements, it would be advisable to request an updated list of authorized distributors.

ECOFIRE is a water-based fire extinguishing agent developed in Spain to improve the effectiveness of water in extinguishing fires.
