Volvo is preparing an electric truck with a 700 km range for long distances

Volvo Trucks is developing a new electric truck capable of traveling up to 700 kilometers on a single charge, a breakthrough that could accelerate the decarbonization of heavy transport.

The electrification of heavy transport takes another step forward. Volvo Trucks has announced the development of a new generation of electric trucks capable of traveling up to 700 kilometers on a single charge, a figure that brings this technology closer to the real needs of long-distance freight transport.

The first model to incorporate this technology will be the Volvo FH Aero Electric, a vehicle designed to reduce CO₂ emissions without compromising the productivity of transport companies. According to the company, this range will allow many daily routes to be completed without the need for intermediate recharging, provided that load, terrain, and driving conditions are favorable.

A decisive step towards replacing diesel

One of the main obstacles to the adoption of electric trucks in heavy transport has been range. Until now, most models were geared towards urban or regional deliveries, while long-distance routes continued to rely almost exclusively on diesel.

With this new model, Volvo aims to demonstrate that electric mobility can also be viable for journeys of hundreds of kilometers, significantly reducing emissions in the logistics sector.

Ultra-fast charging technology

The new Volvo FH Aero Electric will be compatible with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard, a charging system designed specifically for commercial vehicles.

Thanks to this technology, the manufacturer estimates that it will be possible to recharge the batteries from 20% to 80% in approximately 50 minutes, a time that practically coincides with the mandatory rest periods established for professional drivers in the European Union. This will minimize the impact of recharging on the daily operations of transport companies.

More battery capacity and greater efficiency

The increased range has been made possible by a new propulsion system architecture. Volvo incorporates an electric axle (e-axle) that frees up space for more batteries, increasing energy capacity without compromising the vehicle's payload capacity.

Furthermore, the aerodynamic design of the FH Aero range helps to reduce energy consumption during long-distance journeys, improving the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

The transport industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by European emissions reduction targets and the development of new charging infrastructure for industrial vehicles.

Volvo Trucks already sells several electric models and has delivered thousands of units in various international markets. The arrival of this new generation represents a further step towards expanding the use of electric trucks to operations where they have previously been less competitive than conventional engines.

Although expanding the charging infrastructure will remain one of the major challenges, increased range and the implementation of the MCS system could accelerate the transition to freight transport with significantly lower emissions.

A market increasingly prepared for change

Manufacturers agree that the future of heavy transport will combine different technologies depending on the type of operation. However, the evolution of batteries and fast-charging systems is rapidly narrowing the gap between electric trucks and traditional diesel models.

With a range of up to 700 kilometers, Volvo sets the bar high for long-distance electric transport and reinforces a trend towards increasingly sustainable and efficient logistics.
